Your baby will be spending a lot of time in his crib

Cleaning your baby's crib might seem like an arduous task but it's not. Just follow the simple tips below and you'll be spending time with your baby in no time:

Beddings

Your baby's crib beddings include the mattress, blankets, sheets, bumpers and quilts. These are used to create a warm sleeping surface and keep your baby warm and cozy.

Remove unnecessary beddings from the crib to eliminate the possibility of suffocation and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Wash beddings according to manufacturers' instructions. If the instructions say hand wash them, then do not run them in the washing machine. It if says use warm water then do not wash it in cool water. Also, use only the mildest laundry products when washing your baby's beddings since exposure to chemicals in regular laundry products can cause severe allergies on your baby's sensitive skin. Separate beddings from other clothes to avoid contamination, especially from underwear. Underwear may contain traces of E. coli bacteria from residual feces.

As for your baby's mattress, air it out at least once a week. Leave it under the sun to kill the dust mites that might have gathered in it. Use a hand vacuum to suck out dirt.

Crib pillows

Wash pillows in mild detergent at least once a month. To wash pillows, simply fill a large basin with warm water and mix in just the right amount of mild detergent. Soak each pillow one small section at a time. Rub each section gently until the pillow is clean. Gently squeeze out the excess detergent and rinse thoroughly in water. You can either leave them out under the sun for even drying or use the dryer for faster drying (although you have to fluff the pillow more because of the twists).

If your baby is allergic to feather pillows, opt for foam pillows. However, do not let your baby sleep with it since it poses a risk of suffocation.

Parts of your baby's crib

As for the other parts of your baby's crib (its metal, wood or plastic components) wipe it down using a clean cloth doused with a mild disinfectant. You should also vacuum your baby's crib at least once a week to take out the dust and dust mites that could be living in the spaces between slats and railings.

Cleaning your baby's crib is also a chance for you to check for any defect in the structure or any loose parts or missing components that could pose safety risks for your baby. You should also check for any missing parts from toys that could pose a choking risk for your baby. Cleaning your baby's crib gives assurances that what he/she is sleeping on is not only comfortable but also clean and safe.
